Fakkelgaarden Hotel & Restaurant ApS
The history of Fakkelgaarden
The buildings of Fakkelgaarden originally formed the framework for the “Border Home”. A combined youth hostel and cultural center for young people from North Schleswig and the rest of Denmark. With the reunification of South Jutland with the rest of Denmark in mind a few years earlier, the purpose was to improve visitors’ knowledge of the borderland and thereby create an understanding of the area’s very special culture.
The official inauguration on 18 October 1936 was attended by locals as well as the royal couple Christian X and Alexandrine. Martin Hammerich was behind the initiative for the construction.
Meeting point for Danes and Germans
During World War II, the Germans used the Border Home as a recreation center for wounded German soldiers. Like many other places in Denmark, Kollund also housed Danish saboteurs who regularly carried out sabotage against, among other things, the railway in order to hinder German activities.
Towards the end of the war, however, three young saboteurs were close to being discovered and were forced to go underground.
The story goes that the manager of the Border Home secretly gave the saboteurs shelter in the Tower. Until the liberation, they lived under the same roof as the occupying forces, who continued to enjoy the recreational surroundings in blissful ignorance of the saboteurs’ presence.
From hostel to exclusive restaurant
Upon his death, Martin Hammerich bequeathed the property to “The Young Border Guard”. In memory of his exceptional work, a memorial bust was erected at the Border Home. “The Young Border Guard” ran the Border Home until 1978, when the property was sold to the tenant J. Johansen. After that, the buildings functioned exclusively as a youth hostel until 1990, when they were put up for sale again. The Fleggaard family had become aware of the many possibilities of the buildings and the seeds of a whole new era for the old – now completely restored – buildings were sown when the doors of Hotel and Restaurant Fakkelgaarden were opened in July 1992.
Today, Hotel and Restaurant Fakkelgaarden provides the setting for experiences, parties and special events for both local and visiting gourmets.
In 2024, Fakkelgaarden got new owners, who opened their doors on April 1st with a dedicated team, ready to carry the torch forward.
The aim is to create memorable experiences for guests – now and in the decades to come. The hotel has also undergone a careful modernization that respects the buildings’ history but adds a contemporary touch. Among the improvements are new acoustic ceilings and lighting, which contribute to an even more pleasant atmosphere.
